Candid Camera

Sunday Night Memories

Candid Camera has no connection to WhiteSpace except this: For those of us who remember the show, it links us back in memory to a time when the metronome of life and work was saner and human connections more intimate. Perhaps we can regain these gifts — we hope so.

Juliet often says "My father wouldn't want credit as the father of reality TV if he saw it's current state of unkindness, shock value and vulgarity. But he was the first person who put 'plain ol' folks' on television and created the genre leading to all reality TV and YouTube." If only it stayed as he left it. If only there were shows we could cuddle up to with our spouses, teenagers and preschoolers — but there aren't.

Candid Microphone debuted on radio in 1947 and Candid Camera arrived on television at NBC in 1949. Allen Funt passed away September 5, 1999. The years between were spent bringing kind-natured hilarity to living rooms from coast to coast and throughout the world.

"My mother fell in love with him when she caught him late at night in the editing room–all alone–laughing so hard he fell out of his chair. He was so honestly engaged with every subject." — Juliet
